Discussion:
Internet freedom?

Is this for real?

Congress is now pushing a law that would end the free and open Internet as we know
it. Internet providers like AT&T and Verizon are lobbying Congress hard to gut
Network Neutrality, the Internet's First Amendment and the key to Internet freedom.
Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which websites open most easily for you
based on which site pays AT&T more. So Amazon doesn't have to outbid Barnes & Noble
for the right to work more properly on your computer.
Many members of Congress take campaign contributions from these companies, and they
don't think the public are paying attention to this issue. Let's show them we care -
please sign this petition today.

True story... BB used to frequent a restaurant where I was chef!
Now, that doesn't mean that I have the slightest clue as to who he
is/was... Unless he's the guy who always wanted spicey chili or the
other one who came in for oatmeal for breakfast...
So does that make you Opus, Steve Dallas, or Bill the Cat? :-)

Had enough? Vote Democratic!
Yeah, well, it doesn't matter how democratically we vote if the
machines
are rigged...
There it is ... Vote Democratic ... don't give consideration to
what you'll be voting FOR, especially in the overall, because ...
Vote Democratic ... and all will be well with the world. ...
Vote Democratic ... and vote for the whole she-bang, good and bad
alike, without care for WHAT is is you're voting FOR; just ...
Vote Democratic ... and all will be right with the world.
So, go ahead ... Vote Democratic ... or ... Vote Republican
... or Vote Anything ... and it will save you from having to
think, overcome your own ignorance, or have to even have any idea
what any of the issues are. Just ... Vote Democratic ... . It's
so easy, just one lever to pull; no thought required, not even
eyesight if you know where the lever is in the count. So ...
Vote Democratic ... .

It isn't the rigged machines; they aren't; it's the ... Vote
(your favorite party here) ... attitude that gathers in the
ignorants and machine fixer wanna-be's and unethicals alike. So
... Vote Democratic ... ; I'll vote with my mind and a knowledge
of the issues, thank you.

Wow! What a reason for a vote! It must be hard to breathe with
your head under all that sand; and I'm not supporting any
political party with that statement; I'm referring to your
blanket statement - you're definitely ... well, you know so I
don't have to spell it out ... or do I? Maybe I do; but I don't

Even the repugnican voters are starting to realize that. New polls show that
something like 40% of Reps are considering voting for democrats in the
upcoming midterm election. The Dems may easily take back the House, Senate
is a tougher nut to crack but they should get closer to a 50-50 split.

Anyone have any reliably sourced, real data/references? If

I REALLY like the part about IPTV going national, instead of franchised per town -
makes much more sense.

http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article.php/3601406

As one committee prepares to vote on a telecom reform bill that Democrats contend
lacks effective network neutrality protections, another panel opens hearings on the
antitrust implications of just such a scenario.

After opening statements late this afternoon, the House Commerce Committee plans a
Wednesday vote on the Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Efficiency Act of
2006 (COPE).

The centerpiece of COPE is national video franchising for IPTV providers such as
Verizon and AT&T. With the goal of increasing competition in the pay television
market, the proposal enjoys wide support on both sides of the aisle.

More controversial is network neutrality.

Republicans and Democrats are sharply divided over the best course of action to
ensure that broadband providers -- telephone and cable companies -- do not
discriminate against delivering content.

Verizon and AT&T have publicly stated they intend to charge content providers
different fees based on bandwidth consumption to access consumers. Republicans see
little problem with this tiered access approach and leave enforcement of network
neutrality to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Democrats want the FCC's network neutrality principles, which have no force of law,
turned into statutory law. Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) is expected to propose an
amendment to COPE to do just that.

Wait until Comcast and Cox and Time-Warner lobbyists start throwing millions
of dollars at Congress, this thing will get squashed like a bug. Even states
and individual counties will be against this since they negotiate free
channels to carry local programming as part of their contracts with the
cable companies.

So basicly, it'll be like a fee on top of a fee. You pay big $$$ for
broadband, but you still end up with throughput like a dialup connection
unless you pay ANOTHER fee to use the broadband speeds that you already pay
for.

But then again, this does sort of sound like that old proposal to meter the
Internet. (Charge per the KB downloaded or uploaded.)

As I understand this the fee is paid by the provider for preferential

As a whole sure.. but that in turn is pulled from the pocket of the

Higher prices yes but what's more chilling is that only those with deep
pockets get a place at the table the rest may be in the room but relegated
